40G QSFP+

The 40G QSFP+ transceiver module is a hot-swappable, parallel fiber-optical module with four independent optical transmit and receive channels. These channels can terminate in another 40-Gigabit QSFP+ transceiver, or the channels can be broken out to four separate 10-Gigabit SFP+ transceivers. The QSFP+ transceiver module connects the electrical circuitry of the system with either a copper or an optical external network. Introduction

 

The 40G QSFP+ (Quad Small Form-factor Pluggable Plus) is a compact, hot-swappable optical transceiver module designed for high-speed data centers, high-performance computing networks, and telecom core networks. It supports a 40 Gbps data rate using four independent 10 Gbps lanes, enabling high-density, low-power 40 Gigabit Ethernet, InfiniBand, or Fibre Channel connectivity over single or multiple fibers.

Principle

 

The QSFP+ module receives four lanes of 10 Gbps electrical signals, which are converted into optical signals via laser drivers inside the module. For short-reach multimode transmission (e.g., 40GBASE-SR4), four independent VCSEL lasers are used to transmit over an MPO/MTP multi-fiber ribbon cable. For long-reach single-mode transmission (e.g., 40GBASE-LR4), coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM) technology combines four different wavelengths (1270nm–1330nm) onto a single single-mode fiber, which are then demultiplexed at the receiver. The module integrates clock recovery and signal conditioning circuitry to ensure high-speed signal integrity.
